Northampton's History and Attractions
Once the heart of Britain 's thriving boot and shoe industry, Northampton is a bursting and lively town with lots of things to do and see. Apart from its boot and shoe traditions, Northampton is also well known for its cultural heritage, museums, theatres and large country manor houses. As well as these attractions, Northampton also hosts a number of Special Events throughout the year with the summer playing host to many country fairs and grand garden displays along with concerts, the balloon festival and the British Grand Prix.

Althorp House

One of Northampton's most luxurious and historic attractions is the picturesque Althorp House. Althorp House was built in 1508 and has been home to the Spencer family for nearly 500 years. After its recent development it now plays host to a fantastic exhibition, celebrating the life and work of HRH Princess Diana, The Princess of Wales. The exhibition was created to honour one of Britain 's most popular and successful ambassadors.
Silverstone and local motor racing venues

For anyone looking for the ultimate day out then look no further than Silverstone. Whether you are a motor racing enthusiast or not, Silverstone offers a fantastic experience and a great family day out. Also close by are Rockingham Speedway and Santapod where special and exciting events are held all year round.
Balloon Festival

Northampton's racecourse plays host to the annual balloon festival where hot air ballooning enthusiasts come from across the UK to see the magnificent spectacle as the range of over 40 hot air balloons take to the skies. As well as the daily balloon races the balloon festival also hosts a number of daily concerts and other exciting events.
Sporting attractions

Northampton is a major player in the world of sport and has one of the UK 's top rugby teams the form of the previous European champions, The Northampton Saints. As well as having an excellent rugby team Northampton also has a developing football team, the newly promoted Northampton Town FC. As well as this Northampton can also cater for the more relaxed supporter as Northampton also has an ever growing cricket club.
Theatre

The Derngate and Royal theatres host a variety of different shows and events throughout the year to meet every viewers taste. The newly built ‘The Deco' offers an alternative, more intimate venue and stages a number of exciting acts and shows.
